Inside Neon Weather: Nova Reyes on outgrowing home

We talked to Nova Reyes about the record that's topping the Heard That charts this month.

Nova Reyes didn't set out to write a breakup album with a hometown. But somewhere between "Paper Crown" and "Porchlight," Neon Weather became exactly that — a record about the strange grief of leaving somewhere you loved.

"I wanted the choruses to feel like relief," Reyes told us. "Even the sad songs on this record have this lift to them, because that's what leaving actually felt like — scary, but also like finally exhaling."

The record was written in six weeks, mostly at night, mostly alone. "Sunroof" came together in one sitting after a long drive with the windows down. "I recorded a voice memo in the parking lot before I even got inside," Reyes said.

Neon Weather is out now on Heard That, with four tracks already in regular rotation.
